Herd History

Herd History

Established in 1936 by renowned cattle breeder Percy Stovold, the Rosemead Herd has deep roots in tradition, quality, and innovation. With a keen eye for potential, Percy recognised that the Aberdeen Angus breed was perfectly suited to Surrey’s lighter and sandy soils. Their natural ability to flesh easily, combined with their moderate size and efficient grazing habits, made them an ideal match for the varied pasture and forage available on the land.

Over the decades, the Rosemead Herd has continued to thrive under the same guiding principles of selective breeding, sustainable management, and a commitment to excellence. Today, it stands as one of the longest-standing herds in the region—valued not just for its legacy, but for the quality and consistency of its cattle.

The foundation stock of the Rosemead Herd was carefully selected and purchased by Percy Stovold in Perth, Scotland—a region famed for its superior Aberdeen Angus cattle. In a move that reflected both strategy and secrecy, the young herd was discreetly housed for two years in what is now the Refectory Restaurant in Milford, Surrey. At the time, Percy’s father was skeptical about the suitability and future of the breed on English farms.

However, that doubt quickly turned to admiration. In 1938, the Rosemead Herd made its first major appearance on the national stage, touring prominent English agricultural shows—including the prestigious Royal Show. Their performance was nothing short of remarkable, capturing many top prizes and validating Percy’s belief in the breed. It marked the beginning of the herd’s legacy as a champion producer and a pioneer of Aberdeen Angus in England.

From its modest beginnings, the Rosemead Herd quickly rose to prominence, establishing itself as one of the leading Aberdeen Angus herds in the country. Through decades of dedicated breeding, careful selection, and a focus on genetic excellence, the herd has grown to over 400 head of cattle—making it one of the largest and most respected herds in the UK today.

Rosemead bulls have consistently made their mark in the show ring, earning accolades and recognition at county and national levels. Their success reflects the strength of the breeding program and the depth of the herd’s genetic foundation.
